Spartans Topple Tritons on Senior Day
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa (34-5, 19-2 SSC) softball team completed the series sweep of Eckerd College (11-38, 3-15 SSC) Saturday afternoon by winning both double-header games at Naimoli Family Stadium by scores of 7-0 and 8-0 in five innings.
Three Spartans were honored between games for Senior Day, as Deanna Henriott, Susan Jallo and Becky Vyzas each played their final regular season game at UT. All three are four-year starters and letterwinners for Tampa.
Sophomore Kayla Cox started game one and improved her record to 14-1. She tossed a complete game shutout over 7.0 innings with 14 strikeouts and one hit allowed. In the win, she continued her streak of innings without an earned run, which now stands at 65.1 innings.
Senior Deanna Henriott started game two for the Spartans, and threw 5.0 innings of shutout softball with six strikeouts. The win improved her record to 20-4.
The Spartans were home run happy in game two. Becky Vyzas, Stacy Piagno, and Jallo each connected on round trippers. Vyzas’ homer was a grand slam, while Piagno and Jallo blasted solo shots.
UT will finalize its regular season against Nova Southeastern in two weeks, when they will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to open a weekend series. Live stats will be available through tampaspartans.com.
